Shagiri originated in the practice of shugendo ascetics playing music on the mountains to avoid encounters with wild animals, which later became a means of repelling evil spirits. The Shagiri of Kita-Fukuda is performed by musicians and dancers. Its music is believed to be derived from Gion Music of Kyoto.
