Nejō Zumō (Sumo of Nejō) has been practiced by the youth of the Kasuge District as a prayer for good harvests. In the old days, it was held on the full moon day of September and people consumed rice cake made with early crop rice of that year. The preparation for Nejō Zumō starts with the preparation of the sumo ground about ten days before. On the day of the event, drums are beaten at Kumano Shrine early in the morning to remind the entire community. The announcers go around the community again in the morning before the beginning of the event.
