It is believed that the sasara dance was initiated here by Iwasawa Sasuke, who came to Akita with Lord Satake in the early 17th century. There is a commemorative monument for Iwasawa Sasuke as the founder of Higashi-Nagano Sasara. According to a local elderly, the lion dance requires the same movement of feet as martial arts do. The sword on the nose tip of the lion head is like a ninja’s combat item. In addition, the lion performers dance with a sword at the waist. Overall, the lion dance was a good way to prepare people for battle.
