The Bon dance at Motodate is a variation of the Nishimonai Bon Dance. More than 80 years ago, the villagers of Motodate wished to have a Bon dance in their village and learned from the famous Bon dance of Nishimonai. They added their own movements to make the Bon dance of Motodate. Music is played with shime-daiko (small high-pitched Japanese drums), shamisen (three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instruments), and Japanese flutes.
