Hiyama is where the Hiyama Castle stood in the Middle Ages. The Hiyama Dance is a bangaku dance that has been performed as an offering at the annual festival of Hachiman Shrine, the principal shrine of the Motai area. For this reason, it is also called Motai Bangaku. Its origin goes back to the teaching of Daikyōin-Shōzan, a shugen ascetic of the 16th century from the Abe family.
