Yagisawa Bangaku opens on August 14 and closes with one last performance in late September just before the rice harvest. In the old days, the performers visited other villages as well. The origin is unclear, but it was probably started by ascetics in the mountains. It is considered as a kind of yamabushi-kagura (ascetic hermits’ kagura).
