The origin of Hadachi sasara presumably goes back to the 17th century. There is a record that when Tagaya Nobuie came from Semboku-Shiraiwa (former Kakunodate Town) to Hiyama Castle (Noshiro City) in 1610, the sasara dance was performed for his pleasure. The Tagaya family accorded the performers two flags in red and blue letters with its family crest. Since then every year during the Obon season in August, the sasara dance has been performed in the castle.
